AROUND & ABOUT NEWTON ABBOT

Bradley Manor

Across the River Lemon existed an ancient ford with settlements on either bank:
The Manor of Wolborough (mentioned in "The Domesday Book") became, in the 13th century, the
property of William Brewer (founder of Torre Abbey - Torquay) and so gained the name of
"New Town of the Abbot".
The Manor of Highweek (originally Teignwick) was, in the 13th century, renamed Newton Bushel
after Robert Bushel, the Lord of the Manor and owner of the original Bradley Manor

In 1901, the two manors were merged to create to-day's town of Newton Abbot.

In 1269, both Newton Abbot and Newton Bushel were granted Royal Charters, giving them the
right to hold a weekly market and an annual fair. To-day, the pannier market (retail & food halls)
is held daily in the indoor market and this is augmented on Wednesdays and Saturdays by open-air
markets when the square is full of stalls.

On Wednesdays the livestock market offers, buyers and sellers the opportunity to trade in cattle
pigs, sheep, poultry and produce, and visitors a unique attraction.

On Tuesdays a "Farmers Market" offers the chance to buy produce direct from the farmers.

The modern phenomenom, the car-boot sale, takes over the livestock market on Sunday mornings.
