Sailing Trawler races in Torbay date from 1851. In 1914, King George V presented the trophy known
as "The King's Cup. In the 20s and 30s the fleets included many big ketches, several of the famous
"J-Class" yachts, and even the King's yacht "Brittania". The races were abandoned at the start of
WWII, and it was not until 1997, and the creation of Brixham's Heritage Fleet,
that the trophy was again offered in competition.To-day's regattas are sailed in five classes,
with sailing trawlers over 40 tons competing for the "King's Cup".
The Heritage Race is held on the first weekend of the Brixham Heritage Festival and so the event
always includes lively shoreside entertainment on the Friday and Saturday nights. The Heritage Race
is followed by powerboat racing on the Sunday.
